Portable appliance testing (PAT)

Inspection and testing of portable electrical equipment to the IET Code of Practice, with a labelled register and risk-based retest intervals rather than a blanket annual sticker.

Kettles, extension leads, power tools and IT equipment cause fires and shocks when they are damaged. Portable appliance testing is the routine that finds the frayed lead before it matters. We test to the IET Code of Practice, with intervals based on risk, so you are not paying to test a desk lamp every year.

What is included

  • Formal visual inspection of every item, plug, fuse and lead.
  • Electrical tests where the Code requires: earth continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, functional check.
  • Durable pass or fail labels with test date and asset number.
  • Register of all items with results and next-due date, uploaded to the portal.
  • Repair of plugs, fuses and leads on the spot where safe to do so.

Frequently asked

Is PAT testing a legal requirement?

The law requires electrical equipment to be maintained so as to prevent danger; it does not specify PAT testing or an interval. The IET Code of Practice is the recognised way to meet the duty, and it recommends intervals based on the equipment and where it is used, not a blanket annual test.

What do you provide?

A formal visual inspection and, where required, an electrical test of each item; a pass or fail label with the date; an asset register with results; and a report of failed and removed items.
